Setting Up Your Drums

1) Throne (seat) -- Sit high enough to where the thighs are slightly angled towards the ground. Legs weigh quite a lot and will fatigue quickly from playing if our seat is too low.

2) Right pedal (bass drum) -- The right foot should fit comfortably on the pedal, with the leg pointed directly at the pedal. We want to make certain that we're not putting stress on the knee by playing the pedal at an angle. Position the seat close enough that the shin is perpendicular to the ground.

3) Left pedal (hihat foot) -- With the right foot in position, place the hihat pedal at a comfortable distance and angle for the left foot to rest on. We should feel balanced with the balls of our feet on each pedal.

4) Snare drum - Place between the knees, high enough that both sticks can strike the drum without hitting the drummer's legs. Slightly angle the drum towards the drummer to allow the sticks to comfortably pass over the rim.

5) Toms - Angle only enough to allow the sticks to comfortably strike the middle without hitting the rims.

6) Hihat cymbal - Position parallel to ground, slightly higher than the snare but low enough to strike comfortably.

7) Crash cymbal - Usually positioned as the highest instrument on the drum set. It should be close to parallel, but slightly angled towards the drummer.

8) Ride cymbal - Room for lots of preference. Generally speaking, low and angled 20 - 45% towards the drummer to allow the tip of the stick to strike comfortably. The drummer should not have to extend the arm to strike the cymbal.
